Bush Bus trip kicks off campaign

Grainger Heikell, Trevor Crosby and their charges are packing their pillows for the long bus trip to take on Wairarapa Bush in Masterton as part of their build-up to the Heartland Championship.

23 players will be tried in this game with two new additions in Hikanui Curtis and Jason Tuapawa, both from Pirates getting the call-up due to injuries and unavailability in the squad. The starting team have a lot of talent and youth on their side and the game will provide a good opportunity for the newer players to show their skills.

With 5 forwards in the starting pack, new to Heartland Rugby this may be where the real test will be for this young side. The Jeremy David Memorial trophy was to be played for, but Wairarapa Bush want to play more than the allowed 22 players, to make it a first class fixture. Therefore the trophy will be played for when the teams meet during the Heartland Competition on the 11th September in Gisborne.

The Club final saw a number of key match ups and a lot of the guys in the squad stepped up in what was a pretty intense game. We have a number of younger players who will get their chance to play first class rugby for the first time which is exciting for me as a coach”.
