Poverty Bay Under 16 play in the B Grade of the Hurricanes Tournament. In 2008 the team had a great tournament and won the this competition,  beating Wellington Development in the final.

Selection is finalised after a 4 day camp with 50 of the best players from the province. The camp focuses on skill development and also has a drug and alcohol component and a trial.

NZRU also select the best 50 players from the 3 regional tournaments to participate in development programmes. In 2007 3 Poverty Bay players made the NZ Under 17 Training Squad, in 2008 one player made the cut.

Trials: Nominations are asked from schools. Trainings and trial will be held in the last week of August.

5th September - Game 1 - Hawkes Bay (warm-up) in Gisborne (KO 12.15 at the Oval) WON 42-10

19th September - Game 2 - East Coast (warm-up) in Gisborne (KO 12.15 at More FM Rugby Park) WON 92-0

28th Sept - 1st Oct - Game 3,4,5 - Hurricanes Tournament in Masterton (Depart Gisborne Sunday 27th return Thursdau pm)

28th Sept - v Wanganui WON 59-3

29th Sept - v Horowhenua Kapiti WON 56-21

30th Sept - Rest Day

1st Oct - cross over final v Wellington Development DRAW 10-10 (Wellington win Saracens Cup)

5 Poverty Bay players were named in the tournament team, from the 8 teams at tournament, including teams from the A Division which included, Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and Taranaki.

1st V Beaudine Waaka, wing Penikolo Latu, were named in the 1st XV with hooker Conan Houkamau, fullback Myles Nikora and 2nd V Tamiti Samuels named in the reserves. All the players are from Gisborne BHS.
